Whale, Fish and Shark Painted Seashell Designs

February 21, 2024 by Shelly

My 14 year old granddaughter was over last weekend and painted these 3 beautifull clam shells.  You don’t need to be artistic or have any painting talent to make them. Perfect and easy designs for beginners! All designs were free-handed (no template used) and then painted using acrylic paints. I think they’re absolutely adorable!

Whale, Fish and Shark Painted Seashell Designs

Acrylic Craft Paint
Acrylic Paint Pens
Paint Brushes, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer
Pencil with Eraser
Medium and Large Clam Shells

Getting Started – Wash and dry all seashells. Make sure you wash them in warm soapy water using Dawn Liquid Dish Soap. Rinse with clean water and air dry.

Base coat each shell using acrylic craft paint in the desired color. She had to use 2 coats of paint to get the coverage she needed. Let the paint dry for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Next comes the fun part…decorating them!!! She made a cute whale, a shark and a goldfish!

Use a pencil to lightly sketch the design onto the shell or just free-hand it like she did. Her shapes and designs are not perfect which is what makes them adorable!!! She used a combination of craft paint with a brush and did the outlining facial features and detail work using acrylic paint pens with fine & medium tips. Let all of the paint dry.

Take the seashells outside and spray them with 1-2 coats of a clear acrylic spray sealer. We use one that gives a glossy finish. They do sell matte finish sprays if you you prefer that. Let dry for a few hours until they’re no longer tacky. This protects the painted finish and helps to preserve the shell.
