Tie Dye Painted Scallop Seashell Designs

Tie Dye has been around for decades. It was one of the hottest decorating and apparel trends during the 1970’s and early 1980’s. It’s still popular in some circles today. Tie Dye can be done in any color combination that you find pleasing to the eye. We all find colors combos to be unique per the individual. Just like food, we all have different tastes.

These colorful Tie Dye Scallop Seashell Designs were all made using Betem Acrylic Paint Pens. You can make dozens of them in just one afternoon. A great rainy day project! We like using them as table favors or placecards during the backyard barbecues and family get togethers that we host during the summer season. Every guest gets to take one home! A great project for kids and adults to do together.

If you’re using shells collected from the beach wash them in warm soapy water using Dawn Liquid Dish Soap. Why Dawn? It does the best job at removing sand, debris and fishy odors. Rinse with clean water and air dry.

These patterns were done using simple round and overal shapes. Start by selecting 3-5 colors that you want to use. Make a medium sized dot in the middle of where you want to start. Then pick the next color going around it leaving some of the background color show through between the 2 colors. Continue with the 3rd color and so forth. Then move to a different area on the shell and repeat the entire pattern again.

If you look at our photo most of our’s have a white background (natural shell) while one has a yellow background which we painted using regular acrylic craft paint. Color combinations are up to you. However, I don’t recommend using more than 5 colors on any particular shell.

Once dry…take all of the painted scallop shells outside. Spray each side with 1-2 coats of a Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer. This will help protect the painted finish, help to preserve the shell and give them a nice glossy finish.
