During the holiday and winter season I like to decorate my home with snowmen. I think they’re cute and sweet! They can be put out in early December and left out on display until late February. At least that’s how I do it up here in the northeast.
The designs were painted on large 4″ and 5″ wide clam shells seashells but you can certainly do these same designs on smooth river rocks. I know that rock painting is a big craze too! If you don’t live near a beach paint on smooth rocks or order your seashells from Amazon. The Dollar Tree often sells bagged shells too!
Each shell got 2 coats of a dark blue acrylic craft paint to serve as the base coat. Let it fully dry. Using white acrylic craft paint you’ll make the snowy ground and the 3 round snowballs to form the snowman. I used Acrylic Paint Pen Markers to make the stick arms, eyes, mouth and buttons down his chest. On the one seashell I wrote Let It Snow.
While the paint is drying you need to make the carrot shaped noses. I purchased a pack of orange air dry modeling clay. I started with a tiny ball of orange clay and rolled it into the shape of a carrot. Use the end of a toothpick to put indented lines on it to give it texture and to make it look realistic. They will need to dry overnight. You can speed up the drying by baking them in the oven by following the package directions.
Brush a generous coat of Clear Mod Podge Sealer over each seashell. Sprinkle irridescent glitter on the areas that you prefer. I did it on the snowy areas as shown in the photo. You need to sprinkle the glitter on while the Mod Podge is still wet! Let it dry.
To finish up you need to use Gorilla Glue (not hot glue) to add the carrot nose. On the one seashell I added irridescent snowflakes that I found in the party supplies aisle. I believe it’s confetti! Let everything dry overnight.
You can use the painted Snowman seashells to decorate the inside of your home, to decorate your front porch, back deck, in a tablescape or give them as holiday gifts!
