Easy Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce Holiday Ornaments

Easy Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce Holiday OrnamentsWhen I was a kid every holiday season we would sit down to make a batch of homemade cinnamon applesauce holiday ornaments. They’re easy-to-make and add a country-touch or primitive flair to your Christmas tree. Use them as holiday ornaments, package tie-ons, napkin rings, hang from a peg shelf, etc.

The best recipe that I’ve personally found is by McCormick and you can grab their recipe HERE. You only need ground cinnamon, applesauce, cookie cutters, a drinking straw, and ribbon to make them according to their directions.

However, I go one step further. They can be delicate so I like to take them outside and spray them with clear acrylic spray sealer in a matte or glossy finish. I spray 2 light coats on each side. This helps to make them a little more durable. You’ll want to let them air dry for a few hours or until no longer tacky.

Depending on your decorating style you can cut strips of fabric to make the hanging cords, use satin ribbon, jute, twine, rope, rick-rack, binding tape, elastic cord, etc. In our photos you’ll see that we cut thin strips of cotton homespun fabric to make the hanging cords. A primitive-country look.

When it comes to cookie cutters I recommend using metal ones that just give you the outer shape. I don’t recommend using plastic ones or cutters that have a lot of intricate details. I was able to pick up a brand new set of metal cookie cutters for a great price over on Amazon.

For the work surface…I like rolling out the dough onto a dough board between 2 sheets of waxed paper or parchment paper. They recommend plastic wrap which I didn’t care for and had better results using the waxed paper.

Clean up is easy! You will get a little bit of brown staining on your hands which easily washes off with liquid soap and water. You’ll want to clean-up everything as soon as your done…don’t let things sit for later.  This is a great holiday craft project to get the kids involved! Just let the kids know that these Christmas tree ornaments are not for eating!
