Buying in Bulk: How to Freeze Thomas English Muffins

How to Freeze Thomas English MuffinsMy husband and I enjoy eating those delicious Thomas English Muffins for breakfast several times a week. They come in a wide variety of different flavors, including seasonal ones like pumpkin and cranberry. When I purchase them…I buy them in bulk from a local grocery outlet. They will often run sales when you get 3 full-size packages for $5.00 and all of them are still within their sell-by dates!

When they go on sale at the grocery outlet I stock up and purchase 6-9 packs. Each pack contains  6 English Muffins. I bring them all home and get busy freezing them in smaller packages. You want to freeze them properly so that they don’t get freezer burn or ice crystals on them. I recommend using high-quality freezer bags. You want to sort and freeze them as soon as you get home for the best results.

It’s just the two of us in our household so I break down the larger packs into 3 English Muffins per quart-size freezer bag. Lay them flat in the bag, purge out as much air that you can and then zipper it shut. Label and place the date on each one. They will keep in your freezer for 3-4 months. To thaw…you can do that at room temperature on your kitchen counter for 1 hour or thaw overnight in your refrigerator.

You should NEVER freeze them in their original packaging. Those bags that they’re packaged in aren’t meant to be used in the freezer. Air and moisture can get in…causing the ice crystals that most of us hate! If you’re a larger sized family you can place all 6 English Muffins in a Quart Size Freezer Bag. If you live alone you can certainly freeze in a smaller bag with just 2 English Muffins per bag.
