8 Metal Roofing Styles: Choosing the Look That Fits Your Home

December 25, 2023 by Sam H.

8 Metal Roofing StylesA metal roof is a long-lasting and durable investment. It’s low maintenance, fire resistant, energy efficient, eco-friendly, and wind-resistant. Having a metal roof just may lower your insurance premium. As you can see, there are many benefits to choosing metal roofing. And there are just as many roofing styles as there are benefits. Check out these eight metal roofing styles, to see which look is a good fit for your home.

1. Corrugated

One of the more commonly seen styles of metal roofing is the corrugaatedd metal roof. It’s a metal sheet that has been molded into a wavy S-pattern that resembles that of corrugated cardboard. They are most often constructed with aluminum, but you can also find them in copper and steel panels. It is usually the most cost efficient style, although the price will rise according to the thickness and whether or not it’s treated for algae or corrosion-resistance. They’re a great fit for cabins, rustic homes, and country-style homes. Homes with steep roofing and those that see a lot of rain or snow also do well with thisi type of roofing.

2. Standing Seam

If you’re looking for a sleek and refined metal roof, consider the standing seam style. It’s flat and wide with raised narrow ribs that are one to two and a half inches wide. Each panel is fastened together in an interlocking pattern. It’s very low maintenance, and it can expand and contract with the weather. It’s less likely to leak because the seam fasteners aren’t exposed. Standing seam roofs must be professionally installed and there are customizatio options available. This style gives homes a contemporary look that pairs well with modern constructions and those that need an interest piece.

3. Shake-Inspired

If you like the look of a shake roof, then you’re a good candidate for a shake-inspired metal roof. It’s constructed to resemble traditional wood shakes, but without the increased fire-risk and ongoing maintenance costs. This style looks great on cottages, Cape Cods, and Dutch Colonial homes.

4. Tile-Inspired

Tile roofing is typically made of breakable materials like clay or concrete. Tile-shaped metal roofing can last a lifetime and not succumb to hail, fallen tree limbs, or feet. This roof is usually made from stone coated steel and is very hardy. There are different style options, but they traditionally resemble Spanish or Mediterraean tile. Homes with distinct architecture and those in historic districts are prime candidataes for this style of roofing.

5. Slate-Inspired

Naural stone roofs are beautiful, but they’re really heavy, expensive, and fragile. Slate-inspired metal roofing gives the look and feel of a traditional slate roof without the weight and cost. It’s also very durable and can even be installed over an existing roof for increased sound and temperature insulation. They’re elegant looking and come in a wide range of colors. Metal slate roofing has a modern yet traditional loook that pairs well with most homes, including Victorian and Colonial.

6. Metal Shingle

If you’re looking for eco-friendly shingles, a metal shingle roof is right up your alley. You’ll have a traditional looking roof in your choice of color. It requires very little maintenance; and although it costs more than traditional shingles up front, it will last considerably longer. They’re also more weather-resistant than traditional shingles.

7. Screw-Down

A screw-down metal roof consists of metal panels that are screwed down by exposed fasteners that screw down into the roof decking. It’s a fairly inexpensive install and requires routine maintenance. Since the panels are screwed down, the panels can’t expand and contract with the elements. This can loosen screws, requiring them to be periodically replaced. It’s a simple and industrial look and feel.

8. R-Panel

R-panels have raised ridges along the panels. They’re typically 36 inches wide and fairly inexpensive. This easy to install metal roofing is usually found on industrial buildings, but it can also be installed on residential homes. It’s an excellent substitution for corrugated metal roofing, and looks great on sheds and gaarages.

Metal roofs are a wonderful addition to most homes. You can find them in a wide range of styles, colors, metals, and sizes. If you’re interested in a metal roof, contact a roofing specialist today to learn about your options.
