Stay Fit and Healthy this Winter with These Essential Tips

November 23, 2023 by Sam H.

Stay Fit and Healthy this Winter with These Essential TipsThe cold winter months often derail our healthy habits, leaving us inactive, stressed, and prone to illness. But small daily efforts over the next several weeks can help safeguard your physical and mental well-being. Here are seven tips for staying healthy, fit, and thriving this winter season.

1. Eat Seasonal Produce

Eating seasonal fruits and vegetables that are grown locally and are in season provides more nutrients and often costs less. Things like squash, sweet potatoes, and Brussels sprouts are great choices.

2. Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to forget to drink enough fluids in the winter. However, staying hydrated helps boost immunity, maintain energy levels, keep skin healthy, and aids digestion. Aim for the recommended 6-8 glasses of fluid per day. Herbal teas and warm lemon water can help.

3. Get Some Sunshine

Sunshine aids the body’s production of vitamin D, which supports bone and muscle health as well as immunity. Many people become deficient in vitamin D over the winter months when there is less sun exposure.

Aim to get outside for a short walk or other outdoor activity on sunny winter days – even just 10-15 minutes out exposes you to some beneficial sunlight. Try to plan an outdoor lunch break if you work indoors all day. Getting sunlight, especially early in the day, has been shown to boost mood, energy levels, alertness, and sleep quality.

4. Layer Up and Stay Active

Cold weather keeps many people indoors and inactive. But you can still exercise outdoors if you are dressed properly in breathable base layers and insulating outer layers. Take up winter sports like skiing cross country or downhill. Or try snowshoeing, which provides a full-body workout. Even a daily walk outdoors provides feel-good endorphins.

5. Support Your Immunity

With winter bugs going around, supporting immunity is key. Ensure you meet daily vitamin C recommendations of around 100 mg per day. Consider taking a probiotic supplement to support gut/digestive health, which is linked to immunity. Get enough sleep, stay active, keep stress in check, and avoid smoking/excessive alcohol, which deplete immune resources.

6. Tend to Stiff Muscles and Aching Joints

The cold, along with inactivity, leads to stiff, tight muscles and joints. This results in areas of restricted movement and pain. Visiting a Bristol Chiropractic clinic and seeking chiropractic treatment over the winter can help improve joint mobility, reduce inflammation/swelling, ease muscle tension, boost circulation, and speed up recovery from strains or sprains. Bristol chiropractors use hands-on spinal adjustments, soft tissue work, rehab exercises, and lifestyle advice. Many Bristol chiropractic patients see improvements in posture, flexibility, range of motion, and pain levels within their first few visits.

7. Cultivate Cosiness

The winter season encourages us to seek warmth, comfort, and relaxation more often. Spending more time doing enjoyable, low-key activities provides mood-boosting benefits. Read a good book, enjoy hot drinks, keep your home toasty, take relaxing baths, put on your comfiest sweater, burn candles – anything that brings simple, cosy comfort.

By sticking to small daily self-care routines that support your physical and mental health, you’ll feel more energetic, resilient, and optimistic this winter. With cooler months ahead, show your body some extra care and nourishment.
