The Smile Makeover: How to Achieve a Picture-Perfect Grin

October 12, 2023 by Sam H.

How to Achieve a Picture-Perfect GrinWhen we meet, our smile is often the first thing our friends, family and colleagues see. For people with crooked teeth, gaps, discoloration, or other cosmetic imperfections, the idea of flashing a big grin can cause embarrassment and anxiety. In severe cases, it can even cause individuals to shy away from social situations.

If your teeth are impacting your self-confidence, don’t suffer any longer. From Botox to braces, here are four ways you can achieve a picture-perfect grin:

1. Botox

A gummy smile, though not harmful, can give the illusion of undersized teeth, leading to self-consciousness and dental dissatisfaction. A smile is typically deemed gummy when four or more millimeters of gum tissue can be seen.

To achieve a red-carpet-worthy grin, make an appointment with a qualified provider. A skilled practitioner, such as one who completed specialized Botox training in Dallas, can inject a small amount of Botox into the muscles around the mouth and upper lip to reduce the amount they contract. Forcing these muscles to relax will limit the elevation of your upper lip when smiling and result in less gum exposure. Treatment is non-surgical, minimally invasive, and only needs to be repeated once every 3-4 months.

2. Teeth Whitening

Sparkling white teeth are considered a sign of health and wealth, courtesy of their strong association with TV and film. Genetic factors or dietary and lifestyle choices, such as smoking and drinking coffee, can unfortunately lead to significant yellowing and discoloration.

To regain a pearly white grin, approximately 35 million Americans are expected to turn to teeth whitening procedures in 2024. Avoid DIY teeth whitening methods, such as the use of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, as their efficacy and safety is inconclusive. Supermarket whitening kits, while safer than DIY methods, typically do not yield dramatic results as they contain very low concentrations of the required ingredients, carbamide and hydrogen peroxide. You can easily purchase at-home whitening kits online at websites such as www.teethwhiteningdirect.com or in supermarkets local to you.

A very effective way to achieve whiter teeth is through a consultation with your dentist, who can arrange an in-chair whitening treatment. This procedure involves applying a high concentration of bleach to the teeth and activating it using a UV light. Laser whitening can last 1-3 years and only takes 60-90 minutes to administer.

3. Braces

For overbites, underbites and crooked teeth that require straightening, metal braces have typically been used. Although they’re highly effective at producing beautiful, straight teeth over time, metal braces are also quite obtrusive and can make wearers feel self-conscious.

Lingual (behind the teeth) braces are a more discrete choice, however advancements in dental technology have also seen a rise in the usage of thinner, clear aligners, like Invisalign. This type of treatment involves taking a 3D scan of the mouth and developing customized clear, plastic aligners that will be swapped out over time to move the teeth gradually into the desired position.

Plastic aligners have the added advantage of being removable, allowing users to eat, drink and brush without obstruction. This results in improved dental hygiene throughout the treatment and reduces the risk of cavities developing. Treatment is also often completed faster than traditional braces and requires fewer dental checkups.

4. Veneers

Tom Cruise, Zac Efron, Victoria Beckham … these celebrities and countless others owe their picture-perfect smile to veneers. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin that are fixed to the front surfaces of the teeth to create a more uniform appearance.

This popular procedure can correct a wide range of cosmetic dental issues, from teeth alignment to chips and cracks. Porcelain veneers are also a suitable option where traditional teeth whitening treatments have been ineffective, as porcelain is highly resistant to staining over a long period of time.

The process of getting veneers should start with a consult. Once your dentist has determined veneers are right for you, they will remove a small amount of enamel from your natural teeth to make room for the veneers. Next, impressions will be made of your teeth and custom veneers created to your size, shape, and color specifications. Once your veneers are ready, your dentist will bond them to your teeth using a specialized adhesive and make any final adjustments to ensure a natural fit.

Though veneers are a more costly procedure to achieve a winning smile, with the correct care, your initial investment can last years.

Whether you’re embarrassed by a gummy smile or distressed by discolouration, a trip to your dentist or a qualified cosmetic injector can help you improve your smile today.
