For the past 3 years I’ve been knitting and crocheting hats and caps for the chemo patients at a local oncology office. The hats and caps are donated to the office and given to the patients who need them for FREE. If you’re looking to make knitted hats and caps…check out my previous post on a very easy-to-use knitting loom you can purchase from Amazon at a great price.
Four months ago the office manager asked me if I could make fleece seat belt covers for the patients. There was a need for them. These covers provide a little comfort to the chest area…especially after surgery or if the patient has an implanted IV mediport or some other type of healing injury. Besides that…seat belts can dig into your bare skin and just be uncomfortable.

You can make these fleece wraparound seat belt covers in less than 30 minutes each and they can be made with scraps of fleece, flannel or thicker cotton fabrics. I use fleece and flannel to make them because they’re a soft and padded fabrication. If you’re using thin cotton…I recommend adding a piece of cotton batting inside the cover before you sew it shut to add padding.
How to Make Fleece Wraparound Seat Belt Covers
2 Pieces of Flannel or Fleece 10″ by 12″ in size.
Sewing Thread, Sewing Needle and Scissors
Sewing Machine
Self-Adhesive Hook and Loop Tape – Velcro
Place the 2 pieces of fleece or flannel right sides together. Use the sewing machine to sew around 3 and 3/4 of the edges. You need to leave a 1/4 of one edge unsewn so that you can turn it right-side out. Use a sewing needle and thread to stitch the opening shut. I used a blind stitch but you can use a whip or straight stitch to close the opening.
Two pieces of self-adhesive hook and loop tape are needed (velcro). Each piece should be 2″ shorter in length than the length of the seat belt cover. Peel off the paper backing and stick the one piece of velcro down along the one edge vertically. Press it firmly into place. Optional – You can use a few hand sewn stitches to secure it if you feel the cover will get a lot of use.
Fold the cover in half so that the other edge is facing upwards. Run the other piece of hook and loop tape (Velcro) down that side. Make sure they line-up before pressing it into place. That’s it…done! See, I took you that it was an easy project to make!
These seat belt covers easily wraparound the seat belt as shown in my photographs. They can be removed and tossed into the washing machine for cleaning and then air dry for the best laundering results.
