My niece called me 2 weeks ago to ask me to make a few birthday party favors for my nephew. The party is planned for next month and in a SpongeBob SquarePants theme. Since I enjoy painting on seashells…I decided to paint a dozen of them as party favors. She’s going to place them on the tables as a party decoration. The kids can each take one home after the party.

The design is VERY easy to make! You’ll want to base coat your seashells with 2 coats of a bright yellow acrylic craft paint and let dry. All of the facial features where made using acrylic paint pens which gives you better control, especially if you’re not a professional artist like me. I can ONLY do very basic painting!
When picking up acrylic paint pens I recommend 2 packs…one pack with medium tips and one pack with fine tips. You can indeed mix colors if you need a specific shade. For example: I needed seafoam green colored polka dots…so I first used a yellow paint pen to make the dot and then went over it while it was still wet with a light green colored paint pen…swirling the two colors together. Then let dry.
Once you have the facial features done let the entire shell dry for 1-2 hours or until the paint is no longer sticky.
Take the painted shells outside. Lay them down on an old plastic drop cloth, table cloth or sheet of aluminum foil. (something non-stick). Lightly spray each side of the shell with 1-2 coats of a clear acrylic spray sealer. Allow for 30 minutes of drying time between coats.
Optional: You can write a birthday party related message on the inside of the shell along with the party date using a paint pen or Sharpie marker.
