I love the spring and summer seasons. It’s a great time of the year to get outside for some exercise and fresh air. The sunshine uplifts your mood, your body gets natural vitamin D which it desperately needs, and there’s other positives that come along with those 2 seasons. Especially in the northeast.
Last month I had a little female bird (I believe a finch) make a gorgeous bird’s nest in my one hanging flower basket on my front porch. Every year I get several females who like to nest in my flower baskets. This mom bird spent 5 days making the perfect nest and then came…well…the egg laying! It took her a few days but eventually she laid 5 beautiful eggs.
We watched the eggs for about 8 days and finally noticed the first one hatch. Over the course of 3 days all 5 of those beautiful eggs hatched. It’s amazing how naked those baby birds are once they hatch. A lot of skin and very few features or down that is showing. What’s also amazing is how quickly they grow! In 48 hours they almost double their size!
Over the course of 10 days Momma bird flew in and out of the nest at least a dozen times every day bringing her babies food. On day 4-5 those babies left mommy bird know that they were hungry which seemed to be all of the time. Eat, poop and sleep…just like human babies. Oh…another thing in common…those babies were quite noisy letting mom bird know when they needed to be fed!
Mom bird was quite attentative to their needs. Feeding them all day long…keeping them warm and tossing junk out of the nest as needed. Yeah, my front porch got a little messy in the process. However, it was all worth it to see her build the nest, lay the eggs, keep them warm, babies hatch, get fed and within 2 weeks they all fledged the nest and were on their merry way. Wow…what a great thing to see!
It is very rewarding to watch this process.
P.S. whoops meant to type – she did a beautiful job on her nest.
Wow she did a beautiful job on her next that is some hard work! Those babies are just so lovely thank you so much for sharing these amazing pictures they make me smile.
What a great joy to have and to watch.
Ever so often I will find a video on facebook where a camera was on a nest. And you got watch it all.
You are so lucky to be able to watch mom bird and babies. I had a chickadee build a nest in my fuchsia hanging basket and lay 4 eggs. Disappointingly, I think a stellar jay stole the eggs.
