Ladybugs are one of those insects that I love seeing in my backyard! In our area we have red and orange colored ladybugs that like to hang around in my garden. Some people swear that when they find a ladybug that it always brings good luck. I don’t know about that!
My 13 year old granddaughter loves to dabble around with air dry modeling clay. We picked up a variety pack of Sculpey Air Dry Modeling Clay which includes 8 different colors. What’s nice about Sculpey is that it’s easy to work with and you don’t have to bake it!
Last month she made me 6 adorable Ladybug Refrigerator Magnets using the modeling clay. I think they’re adorable! Here’s how she made them and what you’ll need.
Red, Black, and Yellow Sculpey Modeling Clay
All-Purpose Craft Glue
Magnets
Plastic Butterknife
You’ll start by making the body. You’ll need a 1″ ball of red clay. Work it in your hands until it’s nice and soft. Flatten the ball into an oval shape like what you see in the above photo. Use a plastic butterknife to make the line running down her back.
The head is made with a 1/2″ ball of black modeling clay which you attach to the body. Press it on nice and tight. The black spots were made using pea-size black modeling clay and pushed onto the body. You want them mostly flat, raised just slightly off the body. Use scraps of yellow to make the two small eyes.
We placed them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and set them out to air dry. It took a few days until they were nice and hard. If you want to speed up the process you’ll find directions on the package of Sculpey on how to harden them in your household oven.
Once they were hard she used craft glue to add the magnet onto the back. I highly recommend that you use industrial strength magnets so that they will firmly hold the weight of the ladybug onto the front of your refrigerator. You can find the ones that we like the best HERE.

Check Dollar Tree. They often have an “off brand” of air dry modeling clay.
