Decopauge Houseplant Container Made with Plastic Coffee Canister

Looking for a way to re-use a few of those plastic ground coffee canisters? Instead of tossing them away…use them as houseplant containers! The one that I used in this project is a large one that contained Folders Ground Coffee (originally a red plastic canister). This project took me 2 afternoons to make and is REALLY EASY to do!!!

Wash and dry the plastic coffee canister. For the paper napkins I purchased a pack from my local Dollar Tree store in this pretty floral print. Also from Dollar Tree, I picked up a pack of foam brushes and 2 small bottles of Modge Podge with a Glossy Finish.

1 Plastic Ground Coffee Canister
1 Pack Paper Napkins
Modge Podge Decopauge Sealer
Foam Brush
7″ Square of Plastic Wrap
Scissors

Separate the 2 layers of the paper napkin. Discard the plain white layer. You only want the layer with the printed design. Cut out the design areas that you want to use. Make sure you save some of the printed colored scraps to fill in the gaps.

You need to work in sections…don’t attempt to apply the napkin in big pieces. They need to be smaller in size so that they work going around the curves and within the indentations of the canister. Dip the foam brush into the Modge Podge and apply a smooth layer of it on the canister. Gently place a piece of the paper napkin on top. Ball up a piece of plastic wrap and use that to smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles that you see. Continue this process working around the entire thing in small sections.

Once you get the entire canister covered…go back over it with a generous layer of the Modge Podge making sure that you cover all of the paper napkins as well as the top rim of the canister. I decopauged just the top 1 1/2″ of the inside top of the canister but left the rest of the inside plain. Let the entire thing dry overnight.

The houseplant you see sitting in my new container is actually sitting inside a smaller container. I like doing them this way to prevent spillage of water, etc. I just think it looks nice instead of planting it directly into the coffee canister. Either way will work!

OMG it has been 30+ years since I decopauged. We used to do it on glass made great gifts.

Love this ideal and the cost to do would be so low………………… great ideal

  3. This turned out so pretty and what a clever idea to repurpose coffee containers. I love the napkins that you used and I had no idea that they sold modge podge at the Dollar Tree.
