How to Clean a Walking Cane

June 21, 2023 by Shelly

How to Clean a Walking CaneMillions of Americans get around with the help of a walking cane but how many of them clean it regularly? Sadly, not many. It’s important to clean them regularly to keep them germ-free. But how do you do it? Well, I’m going to tell you…it’s easy!

Wood canes need to be cleaned a little bit differently than metal ones. Wood can warp and the finish can peel when it comes into contact with water and cleaning solutions. Spray a general all-purpose cleaner onto a cotton cleaning cloth and wipe it down starting at the handle and moving down. Take a separate cotton cloth and towel it dry.

Metal canes can be cleaned a variety of different ways. You can wipe them down with handy disinfecting cleaning cloths, damp cotton cloths or with a hand-held steam cleaner. After cleaning you need to towel it dry with a clean cotton cloth.

How often should a cane be cleaned? If you’ve been outside of the home at a doctor’s office, shopping, or in a public place…clean the cane as soon as you get home! This will help to cut the invasion of germs into your home. If you don’t go out often (more home bound) you should clean the cane once a week just to prevent the possible spread of germs.

While you’re cleaning it…get into the habit of giving it an overall inspection. Make sure the handle isn’t lose…the rubber cap at the bottom is still firmly attached, etc. If things seem to be loose are starting to deterioate it’s time to make repairs or purchase a new walking cane.

I have to admit I have never thought about cleaning my cane………………. I will now

I always listen for sounds from my cane in case something is lose. Also look at the bottom of the rubber ip on your cane., If it is wearing down it needs replaced.
