Fighting Depression: 4 Useful Coping Strategies

June 23, 2023 by Sam H.

Fighting DepressionMany individuals say that they are depressed these days. There might be even more of them out there than report feeling depressed since they don’t want to see a therapist or a doctor about it. Depression can drag you down, though, and it can make your life miserable in some instances.

If you feel that you are having depression symptoms, there are a few things you might do about that. We will run through four of the best ones right now.

Seek Out a Qualified and Competent Therapist

Therapy is one of the better things that you might do for yourself when you feel depressed. However, getting into therapy is not easy. It takes a tremendous act of courage to set up that first appointment and to go to it.

If you do it, though, you might find that it’s pleasant to have someone to talk to. You can always talk to family members or friends about your depression, but it’s not the same thing as speaking to a mental health professional who has received training and probably has some good advice for you.

Look Into Prescription Drugs You Can Take

Some people who are depressed self-medicate. You might indulge in marijuana, alcohol, or other drugs.

That’s seldom a good idea, though. You can regulate your mood with alcohol and drugs, but it’s very easy to become dependent on them or even addicted to them.

You might do better by getting prescribed drugs from a mental health professional. Once you tell them about your symptoms, they may be able to tell you what drug you can go on that will elevate your mood or even it out. You might find that’s the best thing for you if a psychiatrist can prescribe medication.

Spend Time with Friends

If you feel depressed, it might be all you can do just to pull yourself out of bed every morning and engage with the world. You have to try to do it, though. If you let depression control you, you will also hurt the people in your life who love you and depend on you.

Spending time with people who you know care about you can often make you feel better. Even if it’s just having lunch with a friend or going to see a movie with them, it can get you out of your own head for a while. Sometimes, forcing yourself to be sociable is a smart move.

Meditate

Meditation can put you back in touch with yourself and your feelings if you sense that depression is getting you down. If you meditate and concentrate on your breathing for a few moments out of each day, that can give you a calming sensation that might help you.

When you meditate, you can bring on a sense of hyper-awareness that can often shake off feelings of sadness, depression, or malaise. You might decide to make that a part of your daily activities and see whether it makes a difference. Many people with chronic depression symptoms find that it does.
