5 Challenges of Adolescence and How to Overcome Them

June 22, 2023 by Sam H.

5 Challenges of Adolescence and How to Overcome ThemAdolescence can be a challenging time and an awkward one. You have within you the seeds of the adult you will soon become. You have not reached that point yet, though, and the period that comes between childhood and adulthood can seem perilous sometimes.

Adolescent mental health can be fragile, but with some determination and courage, you should make it through to adulthood. In the meantime, let us discuss a few of the most common adolescent challenges and how you might overcome them.

Shyness

Some adolescents are shy. That is not uncommon, but you might struggle to even talk to your peers if you’re not confident.

You can practice conversations in front of a mirror at home. You might also read books and watch online videos about overcoming shyness. If you practice typical social situations exhaustively, you should gradually get better at them when you occur in your life.

This oral surgeon in Chattanooga TN adds that dental health plays a significant role in confidence, especially for adolescents. A healthy smile can make social interactions more comfortable and reduce self-consciousness. Regular dental checkups, proper oral hygiene, and addressing concerns like crooked teeth or discolouration can enhance not just oral health but also the confidence to engage in conversations and build relationships.

Anxiety

Anxiety is another common adolescent issue. You might talk to a mental health professional if you find it is a major struggle for you.

If you can speak to someone about why you feel anxious, just getting it out in the open can be a huge relief. You might also look into getting medication if your therapist thinks that it’s warranted. Moreover, if you are looking for some natural ways to overcome it then L-theanine, commonly found in green tea, is known for promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety by increasing calming brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, without causing drowsiness. You can find the best L-Theanine supplements on amazon.com.

Skin Blemishes

Skin blemishes during adolescence happen quite often. Usually, these will clear up when you become an adult. During your teenage years, though, you might sometimes feel like you barely want to leave the house if you’re experiencing a breakout.

Luckily, skin treatments exist now that can help with adolescent acne like never before. You have over-the-counter products that can make a huge difference. If you have a bad case, you might also speak to your doctor about getting some prescription medication that should clear up your skin.

Bullying

Bullying has likely existed for as long as human society has. Those who are stronger and have a mean streak will always try to prey on those they perceive as easy targets.

You have several options if this is happening to you. You can take a martial art to learn self-defense. You might take boxing classes or start weight training so you look more formidable.

You can consider telling a parent or teacher about what’s happening so that they can intervene. If things get bad enough, you can even transfer out of your school or see if your parents are willing to move out of the neighborhood. Usually, though, you’ll want to figure out a way you can stand up for yourself, or you’ll get in the habit of running from your problems.

Peer Pressure

Peer pressure can be difficult during your adolescent years. Other kids might pressure you to try drugs, skip school, do something of a sexual nature that makes you feel uncomfortable, etc.

You can stop hanging out with a certain individual or group if they won’t leave you alone. Finding other friends who won’t pressure you is often possible and will make you feel better.

So many things to consider as my granddaughter goes through this stage. I think social media definitely exacerbates these issues, but it is good to have these helpful strategies.
