Frugal Shopping – Buying Candy and Decor After the Easter Holiday

Frugal Finds and Hot DealsWhen I shop for “after the holiday” bargains and deals I like to hit the retail stores 1-2 weeks AFTER the holiday has passed. A lot of shoppers think they need to go out the very next day to get the bargains. FALSE! While some things will be picked over and you may have to check a few stores for after-holiday items…You’ll get BIGGER discounts!!!

There are 5 stores I like to shop at for after holiday deals. The first few days they offer leftover merchandise for 25% to 50% off. Waiting for at least a full week to pass gets you bigger discounts…often 75% to 90% off. The variety of items available are less but the savings are MUCH higher!

After Easter Candy Deals

Here’s an example:

My daughter was in Dollar General 5 days after Easter. Their leftover items were marked down 25-50% off which is typical for them. I went into the same store 9 days after Easter and was able to purchase everything you see in the photos for 75% to 80% off.

Each of those candy and treat filled Easter baskets came down to $2.80 each!!! The large chocolate Peter Rabbits came down to .55 cents each. The coconut eggs .20 cents and the white chocolate small rabbits .20 cents each. The one Easter basket came with a nice kickball that the grandchildren will love playing with this summer.

Once home I always take apart the goodies from the pre-filled Easter baskets. All of that chocolate candy freezes well. I like to give it out as “treats” the next few months when the grands are visiting. The non-food items like coloring books, sticker sets, puzzles, balls, etc. can be tucked away for next Easter. You get the idea.

Easter Decor at Bargain Prices

This is a good time to shop for holiday decor too! I always look for a few new little decor accessories that I can use next year. Why pay full price if I don’t have to? That’s right, I love a bargain!!! All of the items you see in the above photograph were 75% to 80% off.

The packs of large plastic eggs (they’re not mini sizes) came down to .30 cents a pack. I purchased 10 for our Easter Egg Hunt next year. Printed holiday napkins originally $2.00 per pack came down to .50 cents a pack. The wood bead Easter garlands with fringe ends came down to $1.00 each, so I purchased 2 of them to use on my tiered tray display next year. The tall Easter gnome came down to $3.00, the wood Easter gnome that says SPRING on it came down to $2.00 and the square Happy Easter decor accessory came down to $1.50. DEALS!

After I got home I removed all of the price stickers off of the items and sorted through everything. I store my Easter holiday items in 3 large plastic totes in our attic. Organized and labeled. They’ll be fun to put out next year when Spring and Easter roll around. Did you get any great after holiday deals?

I did this at Target and bought a lot of chocolate for 70% off. I did not need the baskets or plastic eggs.

I used to do this all the times after holidays BUT living in a apartment now and not enough storage room. And the bigger reason only one little kid left all the rest of the families kids are grown up. Now my mother loves to get the after sales candies. She has a major sweet tooth and will freeze some and eat the rest
