Decoupage Clam Seashells for Spring Decorating

April 10, 2023 by Shelly

These decoupage clam seashells are super easy to make. We made them using 4″ to 5″ wide clam shells that we collected from the beach. If you don’t have large seashells available to you…you can do the same thing to river rocks and smooth stones. They add a nice pop of color to your outdoor spaces during the spring season or use them inside your home as decorator accents.

Before you get started you want to wash the seashells in warm soapy water. I like using Dawn Liquid Dish Soap as it does a great job at getting the sand, debris and fishy odors out of the shells. Rinse clean. Shells will need to completely dry before working with them. The drying process can take 1-3 days depending on air temperature and drying conditions. I like to put them outside in the hot sun to dry.

Large Clam Seashells
Paper Napkins with Pretty Design
Scissors
Foam Brush
Mod Podges Decoupage Sealer
6″ Square of Plastic Wrap, Crumbled into a Ball
Pencil and Paper

Trace around the shell using a pencil onto a piece of scrap paper. Cut out that shape to use as a template. Separate the layers of the paper napkin. You ONLY want to use the top layer with the printed design. Place the paper template onto the napkin and cut around it. You should now have a piece of “shell” shaped paper napkin.

Dip the foam brush into the Mod Podge Decoupage Sealer and brush it onto the seashell covering the area completely. You can do this on the inside or outside of the shell. Our photo shows it done both ways, so it’s according to your personal preference. Gently place the paper napkin on top. Use the wad of plastic wrap to help smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles. Be gentle as you don’t want to accidentally tear the napin.

Cover the entire napkin with the Mod Podge to seal it to the seashell. Be generous with the amount of sealer that you’re using. Let it dry until clear. You can use scissors to trim any of the napkin that may over-hang the edges once completely dry. You can leave the edges plain or paint them a pretty color if desired. I liked them plain.
