Saving money is crucial, but it can be about as fun as folding laundry without a podcast to keep you company. The good news is that while saving money will never be the most thrilling experience, it can be a little more enjoyable with these seven tips:
Get Some Help
If you are naturally more talented in areas other than maths, you find finances stressful, or you’re the kind of person who leaves everything until the last minute, get some help with your individual tax return and other financial essentials. Not only will that mean you don’t get flattened by pure panic and stress, but you’ll receive tips on saving money and should walk away with a better tax refund to top it off.
Keep Your “Why” in Mind
Whether you watch videos of the holiday destination you’re saving up to visit or reread texts you sent your mom when you had no emergency fund, saving is more enjoyable when it’s emotionally relevant. Rereading tragic old texts might not sound fun, but fear is a powerful motivator!
Take Inspiration
Some of the most successful people in the world are known to be frugal. Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet, and Bill Gates are just some examples of wealthy and successful people who are known to be great savers. Taking inspiration from them can make it less of a sting when you feel your frugality is robbing you of life’s joys.
Make It a Novelty
As a global community, we downloaded 255 apps to our mobile phones in 2022 – 80% more than in 2016. We love a good app, and there’s an app for everything, including saving money. If you are more likely to engage with a boring task if it features vivid graphics, fun controls, and innovative ways to get things done easier, try out a savings app.
Set Mini-Goals
Nearly three-quarters of Americans place owning a home above life goals like having a family or going to college. Many people also want to save money for things like dream holidays, a new car, plastic surgery, and new teeth. That’s all well and good, but when you’re not a natural saver, you need a little something in the meantime as a reward. A meal out, a new top, a day at the beach – enjoy small treats like these every time you reach a meaningful mini milestone.
Try a Minimalist Approach
When you go minimalist, you stop buying loads of stuff (saving money), and you cut your belongings down to the items you need or that truly give you joy. In doing so, you can make money selling things and benefit from lower anxiety, better sleep, and an improved ability to focus. Is it a roundabout way to enjoy saving? Yes! But it definitely counts.
Get an Accountability Buddy
A study conducted in 2016 showed that 95% of those who started a weight-loss program with friends managed to finish the program. As humans, we like accountability buddies, and it can feel safe to be part of a crowd.
So grab a friend who also wants to save money and do it together. Have fun doing free activities, sharing homemade lunches, and even working a side hustle together – it’s more fun than scraping those dollars alone.
There are loads of ways to make saving money more enjoyable. So download that app or find an accountabili-buddy, and reach those financial goals – you’ll be rolling in money before you know it!
