Tips for Buying Children’s Costumes

Children love to play make believe and dress-up as some of their favorite characters. Costumes can be purchased at a store, on the secondary market, or handmade. Children aren’t particular on where their costume comes from…just as long as it’s cute and portrays a particular character.

Here are some important tips for buying children’s costumes.

1. Safety – You want to make sure it’s appropriate for the child’s age. No lose parts that can pose a choking or strangulation hazard.

2. Flame Retardant – Whenever possible go with flame retardant clothing and accessories.

3. Size – It should fit the child without being too big or too small. Costumes that don’t fit properly can cause tripping, strangulation, and other preventable accidents. Make sure it’s the proper size and fit for the child.

4. Check for Product Recalls – You would be surprised to learn that a lot of costumes and accessories get recalled for safety violations. These recalls can occur quickly or several years after it was released.

5. Inspection – Inspect everything thoroughly and that includes any accessories! Just don’t assume because it’s new or gently-used that it’s fine to give to your child.

6. Supervision – A young child should always be supervised by an adult when playing dress-up. It’s also recommended that you never let a child sleep wearing a costume.

Educate yourself and know what you’re buying before shelling out the money for it. Children don’t care about how much it costs or which name brand you may be buying. Follow the tips above to ensure that your child has a memorable experience wearing costumes and playing dress-up.
