How to Wash and Store Decorative House Flags

Decorative House Flags are a nice way to add color and decor to your front and back yards. I like to change mine out as the seasons and holidays change throughout the year. If I had to guess, I would estimate that we own at least a dozen decorative house flags.

How to Wash and Store Decorative House Flags

Over the years I’ve learned how to properly wash and store them. Today I thought I would share some of my tips with all of you.

Washing

Method 1: The majority of the time I spray them down with a garden house while hanging and a tad of non-toxic liquid dish soap. Spray the flag with the garden hose. In a spray bottle filled with water and 1 teaspon of liquid dish soap…spray it on the flag. Then rinse clean with the garden hose. Let hang for several hours to air dry. Then take it down to be put away.

Method 2: You can hand wash them in a bath tub with warm soapy water. Rinse with clean water. Hang outside to air dry.

Method 3: Place the flag into a lingerie laundry bag or old pillowcase tied shut. Place into the washing machine set on cold water and the delicate cycle. Use a mild delicate laundry detergent and launder. Remove from the washing machine promptly and hang-up to air dry.

Storing

Method 1: At the Dollar Tree I purchased a package of hair ties. You can use rubberbands but I prefer using hair ties. Roll up the decorative house flag like a poster and then secure it shut with a hair tie. Store them in a storage container made for rolled gift wrap (wrapping paper).

Method 2: Fold the flags down and store flat in a storage container.

Method 3: Got an old closet in your attic or dry basement? If so, you can use clothespins to clip each flag onto a hanger and then hang them up on a closet rod.

Extra Care

To keep your decorative flags looking nice year after year you want to take the time to spray them with a Scotchgard fabric protector. The one that I use protects them from the weather elements (rain and snow) and also protects them from sun fade. It’s worth the extra step! I do this step EVERY TIME I hang one up to be displayed at the beginning of the season.
