Homemade Dry Turkey Rub Recipe

Thanksgiving is coming up and millions of people will be roasting a whole turkey for their holiday meal. You can buy expensive dry rubs out in the retail marketplace, but we prefer making our own. Even though this dry rub is for Turkey, it’s equally just as good when used when roasting a whole chicken too!

Before you apply the rub onto your bird you’ll want to brush the inside and outside of the bird with a little bit of olive oil. This helps your bird to stay moist and the seasonings to stick.

Before I get to the recipe I want to introduce you to Selefina, the spice shop through Adagio Teas. Selefina sells your classic spices like parsley and oregano…along with chili powder, crystallized ginger root, Cacao nibs, and everything in between. You can purchase samples sizes, regular sizes, refills, and empty spice jars if you need those! High quality, fresh spices and seasonings shipped straight to your door.

For this recipe I used the Selefina Garlic Powder. I really like the “fine consistency” of this powder. It contains only one ingredient…Garlic! We use it in all kinds of different recipes that call for garlic powder, including the homemade Turkey Rub listed below.

Homemade Dry Turkey Rub Recipe

2 tsps. salt
1 tsp. ground black pepper
2 tsp. dried thyme
2 tsp. dried rosemary
1 tsp. dried sage
1/2 tsp. Selefina Garlic Powder

I measure out the ingredients into a small sandwich baggie. Zipper it shut and then shake it up a few times to get everything mixed together. Open the baggie and sprikle 1/3 of the mixture inside the bird and the other 2/3 of the mixture on the outside of the bird.

If you’re using a really large Turkey you may need to double the ingredients, so that you have enough dry rub for the entire bird. Once you have it all seasoned it, you’ll want to bake or roast according to package instructions or until it’s done.

Selefina sounds like a good place to buy spices. It is so important that the spices s]are fresh so that they will taste better. I always use these spices in my dry rub in addition to onion powder.

  2. I’d eat that! Good spice combination.

  3. Simple and flavorful rub that looks so good. Much less expensive to make a rub than buy one.
