Easy to Make Halloween Hand Painted Bone Ghosts Ornaments

October 1, 2022 by Shelly

Easy to Make Halloween Hand Painted Ghosts OrnamentsHave you ever throught about using pork rib bones in any of your craft projects? Me neither, until now! These Halloween Ghost Ornaments were made using those rib bones! A great way to upcycle them into something new! This project is so easy-to-make that you can have the kids make them and you can complete several of them in just a day.

You’ll need to clean all of the meat off of the rib bones. I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I then washed them in hot, soapy water using Dawn Liquid Dish Soap. It did a great job at cleaning them up and deodorizing them. Lay them out on a clean cotton towel to air dry. The drying process took 2-3 days but could be sped up if you take them outside in the warm sunshine to dry.

Base coat the bones with 2-3 coats of white acrylic craft paint. If you want to save time you can certainly spray paint them white. The paint needs to cover the entire bone, top to bottom, side to side. Let dry.

You can use black acrylic paint with a paint brush or a black acrylic paint pen to make the eyes and scary looking mouth. See photograph for placement. Let dry. Cut a 6″ long piece of clear fishing line and tie it into a loop with a knot. Hot glue the hanging loop onto the top of the ornament. Let dry for 10 minutes or until the glue has set.

Take the ornaments outside and spray them with 2-3 coats of clear acrylic spray sealer with a glossy finish. Allow for 30-45 minutes of drying time between each coat. This will protect the painted finish and allow you to display them inside or outside of the home.

I’m making a dozen of these Halloween Ghost Ornaments to hang off a tree by our garage. I think they’ll look fabulous as part of our yard art and decor.

I have never thought about using rib bones in making crafts. This is an easy to make project and I think my grandsons would love doing it.
