Easy Heart Shaped Fabric Door Wreath

Easy Heart Shaped Fabric Door WreathMy granddaughter is a big Philadelphia Eagles football fan. During football season they go to a lot of the home games and are constantly watching the Eagles play on TV. Win or lose, they’re always cheering on their favorite football team.

Last month she asked me to make her something to put on her front door during the NFL football season. She wanted something Eagles themed. I headed to my local craft supply store and found Philadelphia Eagles cotton fabric on sale. I picked up a yard of fabric and a roll of white cotton ribbon that is about 1 1/2″ wide.

To make the pattern:

I used a piece of poster board and sketched out a large heart shape using a pencil. I then skectched the smaller heart shape inside of the larger one. There’s about 4″ between the two shapes. You’re basically making a heart “ring” shape. Use scissors and cut it out. That will serve as your template. You can make it any size that you like.

A fabric tracing pen comes in handy for the next part. Trace around the heart shape onto two pieces of fabric (on the wrong side). Use fabric scissors to cut out your two hearts.  Pin them together wrong sides facing each other.

Use your sewing machine to sew around the edges of the inner heart first. I used a 1/4″ seam allowance. Sew around the outer edge of the heart but leave about 3″ of the bottom edge unsewn. Flip it so that the right side of the fabric is now facing out. Stuff it firmly with fiberfill stuffing.

Thread up a sewing needle and sew the opening hole shut. I used a blind stitch. Cut 8″ of white ribbon and tie it into a bow. Use a hot glue gun to attach it to the front of the wreath. I took a piece 4″ piece of green floral wire and twisted the two ends together to form a loop. I glued that on the back of the wreath to serve as a hanger. She can now hang up her new door wreath.

You can use all sorts of different fabric from florals, to country plaids, holiday prints for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and so forth. Get creative!
