When traveling I like to check out things that aren’t in the big tourist areas. I like to explore and learn the history on the area. While down in North Wildwood in New Jersey we stumbled upon Ottens Canal in the borough of Anglesea.
According to the nearby historical marker we learned the following information.
In May 1905 Borough Council adopted Ordinance #58, vacating 18th Avenue west of Delaware Avenue for Henry Ottens to construct a canal. As part of the “Ottens Canal Tract” development, the canal would provid water access to Grassy Sound and allow Mr. Ottens to market the sale of waterfront properties. The first crabbing excursion in August landed 103 crabs in less than two hours. Final dredging was completed in December 1905.
The photograph in my post is what Ottens Canal looks like as of June 2022. As you can see…homes with docks are lined up along both sides of the canal. We did see one eatery too. It’s a beautiful area long the bayside of the Wildwood island.
It is wonderful to be able to go off the beaten track and discover things, places like this canal area. I would love to go to the wildwood are and explore.
Great find you never know what you will find “When you go off the beaten path”
Years ago my sister I met in Bosten and rented a car we were all over the new England area. We saw so many great and fun places
