How to Freeze Watermelon and Ways to Use It

July 14, 2022 by Shelly

How to Freeze Watermelon and Ways to Use ItMy husband and I are empty nesters and love to eat watermelon. With that said, it’s just the 2 of us and we can never consume an entire melon before it goes bad. To solve this problem, I started freezing our watermelon 3 years ago as a way to preserve it. We can then thaw throughout the winter season and enjoy it several different ways. It should keep for 3-6 months.

How to Freeze Watermelon

Remove the rind and seeds. Cut the watermelon into bite-size chunks. Line a baking sheet (cookie sheet) with a piece of parchment paper. Lay the chunks out onto the sheet in a single layer. Place the sheet into the freezer for 2-3 hours or until the chunks are frozen. Remove from the freezer.

You can place the frozen chunks in a freezer-safe storage container or zipper closure freezer bags. I like to freeze it in quart-size freezer bags. Make sure you purge out as much air that you can. Zip close. Label and date your bags and containers.

1. You can thaw it on the countertop for 30-45 minutes and then eat it as you normally would.

2. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or for an hour on the countertop. Use it to make fruit smoothies, to toss into yogurts, to make homemade fruit juice, in your favorite icee recipe, etc.

3. Thaw on the countertop for 30-45 minutes and then add into your favorite fruit salad recipe.

4. You can use it to make homemade fruit popsicles. Thaw for 30 minutes on the countertop. Pour into a blender and add just a little bit of water. Blend for 15 to 30 seconds. Pour the watermelon juice into a popsicle mold and freeze for 4-6 hours.

I like the idea of using them to make homemade fruit popsicles. That would be a treat.
