For the past several months we’ve had a Mommy Robin building nests underneath the roof of our back porch. She made one in May…laid 3 eggs and had 2 hatchlings. After the babies fledged the nest she disappeared for about 2 weeks, so we tore down the nest. Besides, it was getting pretty stinky up there.
Earlier this month she returned. Yup, the same Robin. She made a brand new nest in the exact same spot. It took her about 2 1/2 days to have her new nest completed. Then the sitting and waiting begun. After 2 weeks had passed I seen her fly off one day to go meal hunting.
I had hubby pull our step ladder over so I could climb up to take a look. Low and behold, she had another egg in her nest! The nest is bigger than the last one she built so I was surprised to only find one egg in this one. She’s been sitting on her egg like a good Mom!
I’m hoping that I can get another picture or two once that baby hatches. Once they do, they grow fast and typically fledge the nest within 14 days after birth. Amazing!
You were lucky to be able to get such a great photo. It must be a lot of fun to be able to see the same robin come back and continue to lay eggs.
You are so fortunate to have the mama making her nest where you can watch. You got the perfect photo of the egg.
they do like to build in usual place. One blogger I follow had one last year and this year built in the rafters under their high porch. She made hubby crawl under serveral times to take pictures. I always loved to see in to nest
