How to Make an ID Badge Lanyard with Easy Instructions

How to Make an ID Badge Lanyard with Easy InstructionsMaking your own ID Badge Lanyards is a fun way to show off your personality in the workplace. You can make them in a wide variety of different colors, prints, and use holiday fabrics during the holiday season. They’re fun and you can whip up dozens of them in just one day!

You’ll need fabric, metal keychain rings, velcro tabs or dots, a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. We like to use cotton or cotton-blend fabrics when making them. I suggest picking up Velcro tabs/dots in black and white colors. The black looks better placed on darker fabrics and the white looks better on the lighter colors.

How to Make an ID Badge Lanyard

Cut a strip from cotton or cotton blend fabric measuring 30″ long by 2 1/2″ wide. You will use 1/4″ seam allowance when sewing.

Fold strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Sew the long sides together to form a tube. Turn right side out.

Fold in half placing the metal keyring in the fold. Measure 1″ and see the strip shut which anchors the metal keyring into place.

Fold back each end 1″ and sew each one down into place. We used two pieces of Velcro each measuring 3/4″ by 1/2″ in size. Sew one piece Velcro on each end.

These ID Badge and keychain lanyards can be used for keys, workplace ID, subway badges, public transit passes, School IDs, etc. Just clip them onto the metal keyring. Using Velcro to secure the ends around the neck allows you to tear it off quickly in an emergency.

If you’re a walker, hiker, bicycle rider, jogger, etc. You can attach a mini canister of pepper spray or mace to them in case of an emergency. Easier to get to as compared to digging around in a handbag, duffle bag, or backpack. Time counts in an emergency!
