How to Make a Beach Flip Flop Fly Swatter

How to Make a Beach Flip Flop Fly SwatterThese beach themed Flip Flop Fly Swatters are really easy to make and are perfect for summer! You only need a few basic items to make them. You’ll want to make several to keep around the house, in your RV, camper, etc. They’re great for killing all kinds of bugs…spiders, flies, stink bugs, mosquitoes, etc.

To keep costs down I picked up craft supplies at my local Dollar General Store. I was able to get a 2-pack of fly swatters for $1.00 and a pair of kid’s foam flip flops for $2.00. The bottle of craft glue was $1.50. Here’s what you’ll need to make each one.

Pair of Kid’s Size Foam Flip Flops
Pair of Fly Swatters with Metal Handles
All Purpose Quick Drying Craft Glue
Drill with Small Diameter Drill Bit

The first thing you want to do is drill a 1 1/2″ to 2″ long tunnel at the heel of the flip flop using a drill bit. The tunnel diameter needs to be big enough for the metal handle from the fly swatter to fit through. Do this carefully. The little plugs under the sole weren’t tight and easily moved around. I used all-purpose craft glue to secure them into place.

Remove the plastic flower shape from the handle. I was able to pull each one off with my bare hands, no tools needed. You can toss them or use them for another project later on. Squirt a generous amount of craft glue in the tunnel that you drilled and then insert the handle. Let dry for 4 to 6 hours or until the glue has set.

You can decorate the flip flops which I plan on doing. I’m going to add a silk flower to the thong portion and some rhinestone beads around the strap. You could add small seashells, paint, beads, stickers, etc. You can keep them plain like the ones shown in my photograph or jazz them up with paint and embellishments. Entirely up to you!

Tips: I don’t recommend using hot glue onto foam. It can melt it and things don’t stick well. I recommend a good craft glue or adhesive like E6000. If you’re going to add a painted design you can protect it with a light coat of clear acrylic spray sealer which will prevent it from chipping and cracking. You can use hot glue to glue on embellishments to the plastic thong and sandal straps.
