Easy to Make Homemade Barbecue Rubbed Grilled Chicken

May 3, 2022 by Shelly

Last month our local butchershop had chicken on sale at an incredible price. When I see great prices on meat and poultry that’s when I stock up. I purchased 25 lbs. of chicken thighs, legs, and breasts. Once I got home I sorted them into smaller packages to suit our particular family size. Chicken will keep in your freezer for up to a year.

Hubby wheeled out the barbecue grill last weekend and made a batch of his homemade barbecue grilled chicken thighs. He makes a homemade bbq rub which is applied onto the chicken early in the morning, refrigerated for a few hours, and then they’re tossed onto a hot grill.

Barbecue Rubbed Grilled Chicken Recipe

1 1/2 Tbsp. ground Paprika
1 Tbsp. ground Chili Powder
1 tsp. ground Garlic Powder
1 tsp. Onion Salt
1 tsp. Red Pepper Flakes
1 tsp. ground Black Pepper
3 Tbsp. Brown Sugar

I like to combine all of the ingredients together in a glass measuring cup. Just dump them in and stir until everything is well-combined together. Pour the dry rub into a zipper close bag. Toss in 1-2 pieces of chicken at a time and shake around until the chicken is coated. Remove and place coated piece in a bowl. Place lid on top and refrigerate for a few hours.

Grilling Tips: About 30 minutes before you want to toss them onto the grill remove from the refrigerator and let them sit on the countertop. Only toss them onto a preheated, HOT grill. Flip over halfway during the cooking process. Make sure they’re fully done before serving.

This does look like a good recipe to start a barbecue rub and not just for chicken. However, I do like to add a liquid like Worcestershire sauce or balsamic vinegar.

This is a good recipe to start the grilling season off. I need to look for as good a deal on chicken thighs as you got.

That sounds great. When I find chicken on sale, I buy a lot of it too. Sometimes they have packages of miss cut pieces for $.59 a lb. I buy a bunch of those. Cooked up for soups or pot pies… who cares how they were cut before.
