Stay on Trend: Popular Vintage Clothing Items You Can Find at a Thrift Store

April 26, 2022 by Sam H.

Popular Vintage Clothing Items You Can Find at a Thrift StoreWearing clothes designed and produced in a different era makes you feel like you are paying tribute to a different time. Besides that, this trend makes you feel fashionable since most fashion enthusiasts have come to love it. If you want to run with the trend, we’re going to look at some things you need to know before getting started.

Vintage Items That You Can Find At The Thrift Store

Fedora hats– these are a massive hit at the moment. Although some big fashion houses have made adjustments to these hats, there is no better way to rock a fedora hat than finding the original.

Belts– you can also upgrade your fashion game by finding vintage big buckle belts to pair with most of your dresses, especially shirt dresses. Vintage linked-chain belts can also help you make a fashion statement, especially when paired with timely pieces. Also, be on the lookout for sterling silver belts with turquoise touches. These were popular in the Southwest and pair well with cowgirl or cowboy outfits.

Shoes– when looking for vintage shoes to add to your collection, you need to check out designs such as kitten heels, peep toes, or buckles.

Dresses– vintage dresses tend to be detailed. Thus, if you spot detailed sleeves, embroidery, or buttons, you are most likely looking at a vintage dress. Also, look for padded shoulders, ties, and ruffles.

Handbags– the best way to add a vintage touch to your look is by accessorizing with a flapper-style bag with bead details.

Tips to Identify Vintage

Union tags- one of the easiest ways to determine whether a piece of cloth is vintage is by checking for the union tag. You will mostly find the tag next to or being the designer label. The union tag assures you that the clothing is vintage since most clothing unions stopped production by the onset of the 1980s.

Brand labels- another sign of vintage is a common brand name that you love and know, but the label appears different. Although this could indicate knock-offs, it could also signify that the piece was produced in the vintage era. If unsure, resources such as Vintage Fashion Guild’s label resource guide can help you easily distinguish a vintage label from a fake.

Made in the USA- another tell-tale sign that you just landed a piece of vintage clothing is if the label indicates that it was made in the USA. Most vintages tend to be American. Moreover, before the 80s, offshore production was dormant as far as clothes were concerned. Therefore, if you think you landed into a rack of vintages, you should check for American flags or “locally made” mentions.

If you are ready to discover vintage fashion, any Goodwill clothing donation outlet near you is a good spot for such finds. But remember to follow our tips on how to identify legit vintage. Legit vintage will look and feel different than contemporary clothes. The differences are what give vintage its charm and make it timeless. When you buy from a reputable organization, you’ll be sure to get authentic vintage clothing.

I like to shop at a Thrift shop for the prices. I wear all kinds of clothes because if it fits and looks nice I do not care if it is in style!
