Kid’s Crafts Felt Easter Chick Refrigerator Magnets

April 16, 2022 by Carol

I help teach Sunday School at our local church with a group of 10 children age 5-7 years of age. Last weekend we did a quick and easy Easter craft project with the kids. You can find FREE templates online using Google Image Search or do what I did which I’ll explain below.

At my local craft suppy store I found an unfinished wooden chick for .25 cents. I purchased it so that I could use it for a pattern. I did use acrylic paints to paint it so that they kids had an example to look at. They will use that wooden shape as their template for the project.

Trace around the wooden shape on a piece of yellow craft felt and on a piece of white craft felt. Use scissors to cut them out. The ONLY portion you need from the white felt is the cracked egg shape which you’ll glue onto the bottom half of the yellow chick. Since we were working with you kids they did use child safety scissors with this project.

You can use black and orange acrylic craft paint to add the eye and beak. However, we opted to use orange and black 3-dimensional fabric paint since that is what we had on hand. Plus, we didn’t have to mess with paint brushes. The fabric paint has a skinny nozzle, so the kids could squirt it right onto the felt, no brush needed. It will take about an hour for the paint to dry.

Some children outlined the top of the cracked egg shell with gray or black paint so that it was more noticeable. On the back of the chick glue on a heavy-duty magnet. Let that dry for about an hour.

If you want to make them even cuter you can have an adult tie satin ribbon into mini bows and glue one on the top of the head to make a girl chick. You can make plain ones like we did or get creative with them. Overall…each one stands bout 3″ tall by 2″ wide at the widest point if you’re interested in dimensions.

I bet your Sunday School Class had such fun doing this project. It looks like a perfect activity for young kids and fun to take home.

This is a cute project for Easter. I shall have to save it for next year when my granddaughter will be better able to handle it.
