Caulking Tips for Do-It-Yourself Home Owners

April 28, 2022 by Sam H.

Caulking Tips for Do-It-Yourself Home OwnersDo-it-Yourself home owners can easily take care of their own at-home caulking jobs by following a few easy tips. You can use a squeeze tube or a caulking gun to apply it directly onto the surface. I use both methods depending on the size and type of project that I’m working on.

Here are a few Caulking Tips for Do-It-Yourself Home Owners

1. Purchase the correct type of caulking for the job. There are a variety of different type’s and brands out in the retail marketplace. Need help? Don’t be afraid to ask the salesperson for help and  recommendations on the type of product to use.

2. Pick up additional supplies that are needed at the same time. No one wants to run out making multiple trips. You may need painter’s tape, old rags, utility knife, a caulking gun, etc. When it comes to price points…don’t go with the cheapest nor the most expensive. Find products in between.

3. Clean and prep the area before begining the project. Remove all of the old stuff before applying the new. While this takes extra time…it will give you better results.

4. I like to keep a small bucket of water and a few cotton rags nearby. It’s a messy job.

5. Protect nearby surfaces if needed with drop cloths, painter’s tape, etc. If you’re looking for inexpensive drop cloths check out your local Dollar Tree or Dollar General Store.

6. Read labels thoroughly on how to use the product. If you’re looking for some great How-To Directions…visit The Home Depot website and check out THIS ARTICLE for help.

I recently replaced the ceiling above our front porch and spent last weekend caulking. It’s a fairly easy job. If you’re working outside you’ll want to pick a decent weather day with warm temperatures (not hot), low humidity, and no rain. Caulking is a home improvement job that most people can do themselves without the help from a professional.

I don’t plan on doing any caulking but if I was I now know how. Before reading this I would have bough a tube and applied it and would have been done.
