Our health is one of the most important assets we have, and yet too many of us fail to take care of it. This is particularly true when we’re young and feel as though our bodies are invincible but even as we get older, we don’t always do our best to stay healthy. Some people think it’s too difficult to bother with, but the truth is that there are plenty of simple steps such as regular dental visits. The best part is that you don’t have to shell out hundreds of dollars on expensive gym memberships and trendy superfoods! Read on to find out more.
1. Switch to a plant-based diet
Every week it seems as though the newspapers have found a new superfood to obsess over, but the reality of healthy eating is far simpler. By cutting out (or down on) meat and dairy and instead eating a plant-based diet, you can greatly boost your health. Vegan food is not only delicious, it can also reduce your risk of a range of medical conditions – from obesity to heart disease and cancer. In addition, you want to cut down on salty foods, sugary snacks, sodas and alcohol. Likewise, aim to drink six to eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated.
2. Exercise regularly
Being physically active is hugely important for both our mental and physical health. Exercise helps us to lose weight, tone up our muscles, build strength and improve our stamina. Not only that, but it reduces our chances of developing a number of harmful medical conditions. Exercise even boosts our mood and wellbeing by causing the release of endorphins, leaving us feeling happier and less stressed. You’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of alternatives to running and hitting the gym too – everything from yoga and dance to tennis and martial arts will help get you fit and healthy.
3. Put your mental health first
In today’s busy world, far too many of us let our mental health take a back seat. If you often find yourself feeling stressed and at risk of burnout, it’s time for a change. Here are a few tips:
• Meditate for five minutes a day
• Try breathing exercises at times when you’re especially stressed
• Use an adult coloring book to reduce anxiety
• Journal to work through negative feelings
• Spend time in nature
• Dedicate time to hobbies you love
• Keep a gratitude journal
4. Focus on sleep
Sleep is crucial for our health and cognitive abilities, so aim for six to eight hours every single night. If you struggle to get to sleep, there are plenty of tricks you can try:
• Wear an eye mask to block out external light
• Avoid caffeine and screen time before bed
• Stick to a regular sleep schedule, even on your days off
• Invest in a high-quality mattress and pillows
• If you can’t sleep, instead of lying in bed and getting frustrated, get up and read a book until you feel tired
• Listen to a sleep story to help you doze off
• Write down any worries you have before bed, to help prevent your mind from focusing on them and stopping you sleeping
These are all good ideas, but not always so easy to execute. I have not switched to a plant based diet, but I have cut down on the amount of meats I consume.
These are such good ideas. We all need to try a plant based diet for a while to see how much better you feel. Sleep is very important also.
