A lot of people make candied yams around the holidays, but at my home we make them year round. They’re a great side dish with most meals and are super-easy to make. We love sweet potatoes and when you smother them in melted butter, brown sugar and mini marshmallows….well, that just takes them over-the-top!
Baked Candied Yams with Marshmallows Recipe
1 to 2 Large Cans of Yams (Sweet Potatoes)
2 Tablespoons butter (not margarine)
2 Cups Brown Sugar
1 Cup Orange Juice
1/2 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
1/2 tsp. Ground Nutmeg
2 Cups Miniature Marshmallows
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a large saucepan melt the butter. Add in the brown sugar, orange juice, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Bring to a low boil and simmer for 7-9 minutes. Remove from heat.
Pour the canned yams (sweet potatoes) into a 2 or 3 quart glass casserole dish. Pour the hot brown sugar syrup over the top, gently stir to combine.
Bake in a 350 degree F. oven for 12 minutes. Remove. Pour the 2 cups of minature marshmallows over-the-top in a single layer, trying to cover the entire top. Place casserole dish back into the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes. Remove. Let sit on the stove-top for 4-5 minutes before serving.

I usually don’t make candied yams because my family finds it to be too sweet. They other items for dessert , although I do make sweet potato banana casserole.
I like it all except for the marshmallows. The brown sugar and spices make it sweet enough and delicious for me.
My mom always makes these at Thanksgiving. I have never made them before but I would like to try as I so love them. I am so saving this recipe thanks for sharing.
I make something similar but I put a cup of crushed pineapple in to replace the orange juice. I cut the yams up to smaller pieces. My family loves it.
I’d eat that! My question is why do you boil the sugar mixture before putting it on the yams? My culinary knowledge leaves something to be desired.
