How to Make a Pine Cone Winter Theme Door Wreath

How to Make a Pine Cone Winter Theme Door WreathOnce Christmas was done I packed away all of my holiday decorations and wreaths. After I got everything into the attic I realized that I didn’t have a winter theme door wreath. All of my winter items look like holiday decor, so I decided to make two winter theme door wreaths using natural pine cones.

The first thing you want to do is go out on a natural walk with a large basket or tote. Collect all of the fallen pine cones that you can find. Different pine trees have different type’s of cones. I liked the shorter, narrow ones which are easier to work with and don’t contain a lot of tree sap.

How do you remove the bugs, germs and tree sap from pine cones? You can read my previous post with step by step instructions on how to do that using your household oven! Trust me, it’s a step that you want to do when working with natural pine cones that you’ve collected.

I was able to make my new door wreaths on the cheap! I purchased the floral foam wreath shapes, hot glue sticks, rolls of craft rope, bottle of white acrylic craft paint, and a bottle of clear acrylic craft paint with micro-fine silver glitter at the Dollar Tree for $1.00 each.

Pinecones don’t stick well to a foam base, so I used my hot glue gun to glue the rope around the foam form. I covered the entire thing with the rope. Set aside.

Painted and Glitter Pine Cones

Use the white acrylic craft paint to paint the pinecones. You can decide how much or how little. I wanted a light coating, not drounded in a sea of whiteness. This will give the appearance of snow. Once dry I went back over all of them with the clear acrylic paint that contained micro-fine silver glitter. I just dotted it on around each cone and left them dry. This helped to add a tad of sparkle and the glistening reminds of me freshly fallen snow.  You could cheat and spray all of the cones with white spray paint and then a spray glitter but I chose to do everything by hand.

The painting and glittering process took me 3 days since I was doing enough cones to make two complete door wreaths. You have to allow for drying time for the paint and then the glitter. This is not a quick afternoon project but your hands-on efforts will be rewarded! Make more than what you think you will need. You can use leftovers in other projects.

Lay out the pinecones in a pleasing pattern beside you. I liked it clean and simple with them all facing the same direction. The first row you glue on should be a row running along the top. Go the entire way around. Then work on the next row and continue.

Gluing on the pinecones was a process that took me about an hour or so for each one. When placing them onto the wreath be generous with the amount of hot glue that you’re using. You want to obtain a strong bond. Each took about 12 double-size glue sticks to complete. You need to cover the front and both sides of the wreath form leaving the back untouched so that it sits flat against a door or wall.

Finally it’s time to add a bow. I purchased my ribbon at Hobby Lobby and it was on sale! You can make the bow however you like securing it with florist wire. Then hot glue it onto the wreath. If you don’t know how to make a bow they do sell a lot of beautifull pre-made bows that you can purchase. I selected ribbon in a winter non-holiday theme.

You can spruce up the wreath even more if desired. My daughter made a similar one and added red faux berries onto her wreath along with a navy & red printed bow to pull the entire look together. You can add all kinds of different goodies to your wreaths to tailor them to your own liking and decor style.
