We travel a lot from central Pennsylvania down to south New Jersey to visit the beach several times every year. Decades ago we traveled back and forth using the PA and NJ turnpikes which have gotten really expensive over the years. About 7 years ago we changed our route to avoid all but one toll bridge and it saves us about 30 minutes of travel time.
After we get through Chester Pennsylvania (right outside of Philadelphia) we hit the Commodore Barry Bridge which takes you across the Delaware River. It’s a toll bridge but you only pay the toll one-way which is nice! I believe there are 3 lanes in each direction and it’s a pretty nice sized bridge. Okay, I admit, I hate bridges like this and they always get my anxiety rolling.
If you look out the window you’ll see the beautiful Delware River below and all kinds of businesses, warehouses, river barges, shipping boats, etc. along the banks and out in the water. It’s a big commerce area for the metro Philadelphia area and for Bridgeton, New Jersey.
On really clear weather days you can see the Philadelphia city skyline off in the distance and since the Philly airport is nearby, you’ll often see jets coming in to land or taking off. My grandson is always looking for the planes when we hit the bridge and he always ends up seeting one or two of them before we’re out of range.
I thought it would be fun to show you just a few pictures and to admit one of my fears in life…going across big bridges and I always make my husband drive!!! Do any of you have a fear of going across big bridges? I don’t think I would mind it as much if it wasn’t bumper to bumper traffic and vehicles switching lanes going back and forth. Oh my gosh, that drives me nuts!!!
I do not have a fear of going over bridges. I always love the view from any of the bridges that I cross, and I like your photos from this one.
I do find that sometimes I am holding my breath going over bridges…especially the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge (was the Tappan Zee Bridge) which I believe is 3 miles.
