Mickey Mouse Hand-Painted Mason Jar Lid Ornaments

Mickey Mouse Hand-Painted Mason Jar Lid OrnamentsMickey Mouse is one of the most recognizable and popular children’s cartoon character. A lot of kids just love him! Last year I had shared a Hand-Painted Mickey Mouse Seashell Party Favor craft project on the blog and many people enjoyed that. Today’s project is along the same lines except the design was painted on a recycled mason jar lid (metal seal), but you can also make them using soup can lids.

Once finished they can be used as party favors and then hung up on a Christmas tree as an ornament. They’re great tied onto gift bags and gift boxes too. Not interested in that? Glue 2-3 magnets onto the back and you have a trendy refrigerator magnet to help display your child’s artwork. There’s a lot you can do with them!

You will need just a handful of supplies: metal mason jar lid, red & black acrylic paint, paint brush, clear acrylic spray sealer, a hole punch and ribbong or clear fishing line to hang it. We did an template image search via Google to get our pattern. We shrunk it down before printing it out so that it would fit onto the surface of the lid.

Use a strong hole punch to make a hole at the top before you start painting. If you don’t have one…you can use a drill bit or nail & hammer. Just make sure that the back edges are nice and smooth.

Basecoat the metal lid with 2-3 coats of red acrylic paint. Let it dry for 2-3 hours. Use a pencil to lightly trace around the printed template. Use black acrylic paint to paint-in the design. We had to use 2 coats of black paint. Let dry for several hours.

We sprayed them with clear acrylic spray sealer, glossy finish to protect the painted finish. Once dry, you can use clear fishing line or sating ribbon to make the hanger. You can use a marker to write a child’s name or date on the back.
