6 Vital Things to Know While Preparing for a Lab Test

January 17, 2022 by Sam H.

A laboratory test or lab test is a procedure where a healthcare provider takes samples of your urine, blood, body tissue, or body fluid to seek information about your overall health. Such tests are often carried out to diagnose a particular disease or abnormality in the body. The screening helps in properly diagnosing a problem before the symptoms occur, whereas tests are used to monitor the disease and track the treatment’s progress. With the help of technology improving each day, systems from Novapath such as LIS by NovoPath are a great way to make your testing more efficient with faster diagnoses.

Besides this, lab tests are also performed to provide general information about your overall health. Some of the most common tests include urinalysis, hemoglobin A1C, lipid panel, basic and comprehensive metabolic panel.

Here are the essential things to know while preparing for the above-listed lab tests.

6 Vital Things to Know While Preparing for a Lab Test

Preparing For Urinalysis

When your doctor suggests a urinalysis, drink plenty of water before the test. It will help you to give enough urine samples required for the lab test. But do not overdo the water consumption as it may lead to inaccurate results.

A glass or two of fluid – juice or milk is enough, and there is no need to fast or alter your diet. But, if you are taking any medication, let your doctor know about them. Some medications can affect test results, including Vitamin C supplements, Riboflavin, Metronidazole, Anthraquinone laxatives, Methocarbamol, and Nitrofurantoin.

Preparing for Hemoglobin A1C Test

One of the most common tests, the hemoglobin A1C test, is done in a lab using a sample of blood drawn from your arm or finger. You do not have to do anything special to prepare for this test. Ask your physician if other tests are to be done simultaneously.

Preparing for Lipid Panel

A lipid panel is a blood test for measuring your lipids – fatty substances and fats used as a source of energy throughout your body. These lipids include cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, etc.

In most of these tests, you may need to fast for 10-12 hours before the test. Do not eat or drink anything except water. It would be best to ask your healthcare provider whether you need to fast before the test or not.

Preparing for Basic Metabolic Panel

This test is carried out to check serious problems with your blood filtration, acid/base balance in your blood, blood sugar levels, and electrolyte levels. The test can uncover various medical issues in your body, such as lung or kidney problems and insulin or pancreas metabolism problems. BMP can be done with a single blood sample. You do not have to do anything special before the test. You may continue taking your medication if any.

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

This test helps your doctor detect if your kidney and liver are working well. It is further used to check your blood sugar levels, electrolyte levels, protein levels in your blood, metabolism rate, as well as the balance of acid and base in your blood.

In general cases, this test forms a part of your regular check-up. You may also need it if your doctor thinks you have kidney or liver disease. The test includes taking a blood sample from a vein in your arm with a small needle. Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before the test.

Other Vital Test Preparations

Do not eat specific foods and drinks like herbal tea, cooked meats, etc.
Avoid overeating a day before your lab test.
Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol before your test.
Do not engage in strenuous behaviors like exercise or sexual activity.

Takeaway

We hope that the above-listed information helps you prepare yourself well for your lab test. For more information on different lab tests, visit https://perfecthealth247.com/services/lab-testing/.

I get regular blood draws to check my liver and kidney functions. I was told that drinking extra water is helpful to keep your veins plumped up.
