5 Factors to Look for in Weekend Wine Tours

December 15, 2021 by Sam H.

You’ve made the decision: The moment to explore and experience Italy’s wines and wineries has come. But where do you start? There are just so many choices. You could choose the destination or the specific company that will take you there.

Perhaps you’ll select a method of transportation – motorcoach, train, plane. Or maybe it’s the types of wines that interest you most – Chianti Classico DOCG, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG or something else?

5 Factors to Look for in Weekend Wine Tours

It can be overwhelming, choosing from among these five factors (below), but your stay in Italy must be as memorable and pleasurable as possible. Here are five factors to look for when booking weekend wine tours in Italy:

1. The Destination

Many regions and districts offer wine lovers a unique experience when it comes to Italy’s wine selection. If you’re looking for breathtaking landscapes combined with world-class wines, try Tuscany.

There are endless possibilities for destinations in Italy – the only hard part is choosing just one. If you’re curious and looking to learn about the traditional winemaking methods of Italy, explore Abruzzo or Puglia. If sampling wine from different regions is your goal, consider a tour that takes you to Campania, Veneto, or Sicily.

2. The Company

Many companies offer wine tours of Italy, each with its own unique spin on the experience. For instance, you might enjoy a small group tour with a maximum of 15 people, or perhaps you prefer a larger tour group – with up to 100 participants – so it feels more like socialising with friends.

Some companies offer transportation from nearby airports, while others pick you up from your hotel. Do your research to find out who provides wine tours that fit your budget, needs, and interests. Also, try to find out if they employ fun and knowledgeable guides.

3. Method of Transportation

The mode of transportation for your weekend trip can impact the overall experience in many ways, including price and convenience. You may decide that a motorcoach offers the ideal combination of comfort and value for money; maybe a plane provides the speed necessary to get everything done in just two days, or a train journey may provide the perfect opportunity to relax and take in the countryside.

4. The Type of Wine Tour

There are various wine tours available for every requirement, and the one you choose should fit your interests and budget. If you’re a Chianti lover, consider a tour focused exclusively on that wine region. If you want to try wines from all over Italy, select a multiple-regions tour. Some tours concentrate on food-and-wine pairings, winery visits, or viticulture education. Which one is right for you?

5. Length of Stay

How many days do you have for your wine tour? You can find weekend wine tours that last as few as two days or as long as a week. If you’re short on time, consider a tour of one specific region so you can experience the wines and culture of that particular area. If you have more time, opt for a tour that covers multiple locations so you can compare and contrast the wines, landscapes, and culinary traditions of each one.

No matter which factors you choose to prioritise when planning your weekend wine tour in Italy, rest assured that you’ll have a unique and delicious experience.
