Start by learning about the tools and materials needed to paint in watercolor; then dive into a thorough and fun painting techniques section, which covers washes, glazes, how to add detail in watercolor, and much more. If you’d like to spend more time outside (who doesn’t?), check out the section on finding inspiration outside for tips on viewing and gathering natural painting subjects, such as trees, grasses, flowers, and many other plants.

Title: Nature Painting in Watercolor
Author: Kristine A. Lombardi
Publishers: Walter Foster, Quarto Knows

The how-to book is broken down into chapters: Introduction, Sketchbook & References, Tools & Materials, Painting Techniques, Nature’s Palette: Color Therapy, Ground Cover: Ferns, Mushrooms & Rocks, Critters: Birds, Squirrels & Chipmunks, Seasonal Bits: Leaves, Pods & Thistle, Trees: Barks, Branches & Roots, Inspirational Photos, Epilogue, About the Artist.

I’m a beginner and just now assembling the tools and materials that I need to learn. In the beginning of the book the author/artist gives you a list of tools & materials that you need. I like that she shows you a photo of the different types of paint brushes & tells you the official name of each one. I only had 3 in my collection, so I’ll be heading to the store this weekend to pick up the rest along with a sketch book, art paper and a few other supplies.

There are step-by-step instructions and color photographs for each step. The author does a great job at explaining each step & tehnique in a way that even beginners (like me) can understand and follow along. You’ll learn one skill and then build upon it as you go along in the book. There are plenty of different designs (all nature-inspired) for you to choose from. I’m looking forward to trying my hand at watercolor painting over the cold, winter months when I’m stuck indoors. A great way to pass the time and to explore my creativity.
