Kid’s Crafts – Painted Mason Jar Lids Teacher Ornaments

Kid's Crafts - Painted Mason Jar Lids Teacher OrnamentsEvery year my grandchildren make handcrafted holiday ornaments to give to their teachers and this year is no exception. These hand-painted mason jar lids Christmas ornaments can be completed in just one weekend (allowing for paint to dry) and several of them can be made at one time. If you’re looking to reduce crafting time and mess…you can use paint pens instead of acrylic paints or a combination of the two.

You can find our adorable lady bug design HERE and the super-cute bumble bee HERE, and the GRINCH ornament HERE.

You’ll need metal mason jar lids (seals) to make the project along with acrylic paints, clear spray sealer and clear fishing line or ribbon to hang them. Kid’s can make any design that they like. For example…my 12 1/2 year old granddaughter painted the ornament solid black to resemble a chalkboard and then used a white acrylic paint pen to write on it. She used a red paint pen to add the polka dot border.

Drying time will vary…but typically 3-6 hours. Once they’re dry take them outside and spray them with 1-2 coats of clear acrylic spray sealer. Let dry overnight. Then thread through your ribbon or fishing line to make the hanging cord.

Hole Punching: My husband used an old drill bit to make the hold in each metal lid. He then used a hammer and gently tapped the hole’s opening on the backside to make sure it was flat and smooth. If you have a strong hole puncher, you could try that too.
