5 Christmas Traditions for Kids

5 Christmas Traditions for KidsChristmas is a time of year for young children to get excited about the magic of Santa Claus, the jolly older man who brings presents on Christmas Eve. While you are thinking of gifts for 8 year old boys and girls, also think about your family traditions. It can be hard for kids to enjoy all of these traditions during the hectic holiday season, but you can make it happen with some creativity!

1) Create a Gingerbread House Together

What’s Christmas without a gingerbread house? Get out some graham crackers, frosting, and candy. Let your child pick out what candy they want to use. It might be fun for them to learn about different candies, like the black jelly bean!

This activity is also a great way for you and your child to spend time together during the holiday season. Since it’s typically cold outside, this can be an indoor event for both of you. Make sure kids are supervised while using the stove or oven to melt down chocolate chips, though!

2) Make Ornaments for the Tree Out of Clay, Dough, and Paint

If you are looking for something simple to make with your child, try making homemade ornaments. Get out the clay, dough, and paint that is safe for kids to use. You can help them create their masterpiece that will display year after year until it eventually bleeds into the tree!

You can also do this with your significant other or grandkids. You’ll have a blast decorating the tree together, and it will be something you remember for years to come! Even if they don’t want their ornament anymore, kids tend to cherish these memories as they grow older.

3) Put up Stockings and Hang Candy Canes

Every child looks forward to seeing their stocking hanging from the fireplace mantel. The best part about this tradition is that it doesn’t have to be for kids! You can also decorate a few stockings with your significant other or friends and family members for everyone in your home. Fill them up with goodies like candy, lip balm, or anything else you can think of!

As for the candy canes, this is also a tradition that kids love. Hang these on the fireplace mantel with their stockings, so they know Santa has visited your house. Not only will it be festive and fun, but it will also make for a great photo opportunity.

4) Have a Christmas Party

This is one of my favorite traditions because it’s so simple to put together. Get out the red cups, marshmallows, chocolate chips, or anything else you can find for hot cocoa! If your kids are old enough to help in the kitchen, they will love stirring up all of these goodies together. You’ll feel like you’re hanging out with friends as everyone enjoys their hot cocoa and snacks
.
Don’t forget to make some cookies to go along with these! You can even decorate them if your child is old enough to help out in the kitchen again. It will be a fun activity for everyone, and it’s also pretty inexpensive, especially if you use reusable cups.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can top off the night and go Christmas caroling! However, if you’re riding bikes, while going house-to-house, make sure your family stays safe by strapping on some bike wheel lights.

5) Watch Christmas Movies All Day Long on TV

While it’s important to spend time with family and friends during the holiday season, you also need some downtime. You can’t be spending all of your days in a crowded mall looking for presents or decorating the tree! With this tradition, make sure everyone has an ample supply of snacks before sitting down together to watch Christmas movies on TV from morning until night.

Many stations play these types of movies throughout December, so if there isn’t one that does right now, keep checking back frequently. Your kids might even find their new favorite movie while doing this activity! It will allow them to relax while watching something festive and have fun at the same time.
