Before beginning the project you’ll want to collect 4″ wide or larger clam seashells from the beach. Bring them home and wash them in hot, soapy water. Rinse with clean water and air dry. All of the sand & debris needs to be removed. It will take a day or two for them to thoroughly dry.

Halloween Craft Project – Painted Black Spider Seashells

Large Clam Seashells
Acrylic Craft Paint – Lime Green, Black, White and Purple
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Black Acrylic Paint Marker
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish

Base coat the seashell with 2-3 coats of lime green acrylic craft paint, allowing for 20 minutes of drying time between coats. Let thoroughly dry. Using black acrylic craft paint make a large circle for the spider’s body. Let dry. Use white acrylic craft paint to make the two white eyes. Let dry.

I found it easier to use a black acrylic paint pen to make the spider’s legs and his hair. I also used it to outline his two eyes and to add each pupil. I dipped the end of my paint brush into purple acrylic craft paint to make the polka dots that surround the spider. It looked too plain with out them. It’s up to you if you want to add or omit them. Let dry for 2 hours or until paint is no longer tacky.

Take shells outside. Spray them with 1-2 coats of the clear acrylic spray sealer. I like the glossy finish, but you can certainly use matte. Entirely up to you. Let them dry until no longer tacky. You can now use them inside or outside of your home!

I do like this craft, especially for little kids. Some might be scared of vampires, but most would love to paint a spider.

  2. So cute. Time to visit the beach and get more of those clam shells. The big eyes on the spider are adorable.
