Wildwood Park is a nature park located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The park is in the city right beside the Harrisburg Area Community College, HACC. It’s open year-round, weather permitting and is FREE to visit. There is one main parking lot and several smaller parking lots, depending on how you choose to enter the park.
Right off the main parking lot is a building which houses the indoor nature center. You can go in there to learn about the area’s local wildlife, the park (how it got started), the importance of protecting our environment, etc. There are a few hands-on activities in there for children to do. You can learn about birdwatching and see a birding area right behind the main building.
The park itself is surrounded by dirt walking trails which are clearly marked for visitors. Some trails are easy walking, while others are for experienced walkers. Most of the trails are shaded and surrounded by trees and habitat. You need to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along your own sunscreen and bug spray.
There’s a picnic pavillion along the one trail near the nature center. You can bring along your own lunch but please clean-up after your done. Restrooms are nearby. Cameras are permitted for photographing any birds or other animals that you may see.
Every year we like to take the grandchildren down to the park for a visit. We usually go in September or October when the weather is cooler and before winter sets in. It’s a great opportunity to get them outside in the fresh air to learn about nature. Plus, it’s a FREE local activity to do!
I like to take my grandchildren to parks to learn about nature. It is fun and educational at the same time.
