Wildwood Crest is one of the nicest beaches at the south Jersey Shore. The beaches are wide, clean, and well-maintained. Plus, they’re free…no beach tags required! A lot of visitors to the Jersey Shore select Wildwood Crest as their vacation destination for those reasons alone.
With that said, a lot of people don’t get out and explore the other side of the island. Yes, Wildwood is a barrier island! On the bayside of the island in Wildwood Crest you’ll find a beautiful community park called Sunset Lake Park. It’s open year-round and free to visit. It’s definitely worth visiting if you want to get away from all of the hustle & bustle of the beach.
At the park you’ll find several park benches that line the shoreline along with a gazebo that you can sit in. The views across the bay are beautiful and the sunsets are stunning! Best place on the island to catch a colorful sunset…especially during the summertime.
If you’re interested in kayaking and/or canoeing…you’ll find a small boat launch located nearby. You’ll need to read all of the ordinances and guidelines before getting into the water. On the day we visited we saw a few sailboats, a kayak and several small motorboats out in the bay. The weather was beautiful, so the waterway was quite busy compred to other days.
The park is home to Turtle Gut Inlet, the historical marker and memorial. It was a battle that was fought on June 29th, 1776. You can do a Google search to learn more about it. You’ll also find a small September 11th, 9-11 memorial in the park too. It’s nice to see how small communities honor those we lost on that fateful day in 2001.
We spent an entire hour enjoying the park. Some of that time was spent walking around and the rest of the time we enjoyed sitting on a park bench and just enjoying the scene. The vibe at the park is laid-back and peaceful. A great escape from the busy beach and boardwalk!
This does look very lovely. I would love to spend the day there exploring and realxing.
Such a lovely view and beautiful place to explore. Parks are such nice places to relax.
