Coastal Houseplant Garden Planter Basket
Last weekend I stopped by a local yard sale and purchased a square shaped wicker basket for .50 cents. It was in wonderful, like-new condition and brown in color. I knew as soon as I saw that basket that it would make a great houseplant garden planter. I just needed to change the color and give it some coastal beach flair.
Once I got home I took it outside and gave it two coats of white paint. I used an inexpensive white color spray paint that I picked up at Lowe’s. I sprayed the inside and outside of the basket and left it dry overnight.
To give it that coastal flair I used my hot glue gun to add a rope trim around the top. I picked up the rope from my local Dollar Tree store for a buck…and I still have more left! I wanted to keep the design and style classic and simple. I opted to glue a ceramic starfish onto the front of the basket using my hot glue gun. I purchased a 6-pack of those starfishes from AC Moore’s when they closed their local store last year. I had gotten the pack for 75% off which was a deal.
I keep a stash of plastic containers in a box down in our basement that I use for crafting. In my box I found an empty family-size yogurt container that fit perfectly inside the basket. It was my new flower planter. I added some gravel in the bottom of the container and then my potting dirt. I then transplanted one of my Aloe plants inside it. Give it another 3-4 weeks and that Aloe plant will perk right up and be the proper size for my new garden planter.
Look for baskets at yard sales, thrift stores, and flea markets that are in good shape and cheap. You can easily change the color of those baskets with spray paint and then decorate them to go with your home decor. I really LOVE my new houseplant garden planter.
