Cape May Point State Park Museum – Educational and Fun!

Cape May Point State Park MuseumThe Cape May Point State Park Museum is located on the grounds of the world famous Cape May Lighthouse. The little museum sits about 100 yards away from the lighthouse and is FREE to visit. It will only take you 20-30 minutes to go through all of the exhibits and makes for the perfect rainy day activity while at the beach.

Inside you’ll find several different species of snakes that call the museum home. I remember seeing a black snake, a corn snake and at least 2 others. I’m not fond of snakes so I didn’t get too close! In addition to the snakes you’ll find an aquarium full of hermit crabs and another one that has the cutest little turtles!

Each exhibit has an information board to tell you all about the animal. It’s a great little learning experience for the kids. The museum does hold “hands-on” activities throughout the year and you can find out that information by visiting the Cape May Point State Park website.

I love to collect seashells and I was surprised to find an seashell exhibit. They had a lot of shells from the Jersey coast on display. I admit, there were 3 or 4 that I had never seen before. All are nicely identified along with facts about each shell or animal that inhabited the seashell before perishing. One thing I don’t have in my personal shell collection is a naturally found seahorse! I need to change that!

If you’re a World War II history buff you’ll find an exhibit that will give you information on the World War II Bunker that sits about 150 yards away directly on the beach. After visiting the museum I highly recommend you walk the beach path and go see it. We did and enjoyed seeing it!

The little museum is FREE to visit and takes less than 30 minutes of time to see all of the exhibits. I wouldn’t make a trip to JUST go to this little museum, but if you’re in the Wildwood or Cape May area and looking for something free to do with the kids…check out the Cape May Point State Park Museum.

I love that this is not just a museum since it has reptiles and an aquarium. I would enjoy visiting it.
