These painted patriotic USA flag mason jar lid ornaments can be used year round. You can hang them up on peg hooks, knobs, used to decorate during the summer holidays, hang them on your Christmas tree, etc. They’re made from recycled metal mason jar lids (seals) along with acrylic craft paint.
I do a lot of home canning and always save my used mason jar seals to use in various craft projects throughout the year. You’ll find several of those projects posted on the TCC blog. You want to wash them in warm, soapy water, rinse them clean. Towel dry. Once they’re dry you can use them in your arts and craft projects.
The metal mason jar lids are thin and we’re able to use a high-quality hole punch to get our hanging hole at the top. If you don’t have one…use a drill bit and hammer. Make sure the reserve side is flat and smooth after punching your hole. If not, tap the rough edges with a hammer.
My 12 year old granddaughter made the one shown in the photograph. She painted the front and back with 2 coats of dark navy blue acrylic craft paint. You’ll want to allow 30-45 minutes of drying time between coats. She then decorated it with a combination of acrylic paints and acrylic paint pens that we picked up from Amazon.
She used red acrylic paint to make a large rectangle to serve as the flag. After it was dry she used a navy blue, red and white paint pens to add all of the accents: stars and stripes. Below the flag she wrote U.S.A. and added a white polka dot border to add a little more color and pizzazz.
Once dry take it outside and spray it with 1-2 light coats of a clear acrylic spray sealer. It will protect the painted surface from chipping, fading and cracking. It can then be displayed indoors or outside. Use clear fishing line to make a loop by knotting the two ends together. Loop it through the hole for hanging. That’s it…quick, easy and you’re done! I think she did a wonderful job!!!
