Summer is finally here and it’s important to keep our children busy throughout the summer break. I like to plan various art & craft projects for my kids which helps to stimulate their minds and encourages them to explore their creativity. Arts & crafts are a great way to teach children how to read, follow directions, hand-eye coordination, patiences, creativity, etc. Projects don’t have to be expensive, but they do have to be fun!

A couple of weeks ago we hosted a birthday party for my 12-year old daughter at our home. The weather was on/off rain, so all activities had to be planned indoors. One of the art & craft projects that we did was tie dying cotton socks. All of the children had a blast making them!
We used the Tie Dye Party Kit from Doodle Hog for ages 12 years and up. Younger kids can do it too with adult supervision. We received the Rainbow Classic 12-Pack which contained 12 no-mess, easy-squeeze bottles with dye, 1 bag of soda ash, 9 pairs of gloves and 60 rubber bands. All you need to add is the item(s) you want to tie-dye and water. I did purchase a box of extra disposeable gloves, so that I had enough for each child in attendance.
The party kit comes with step-by-step instructions for 5 dying techniques to use on everything from: t-shirts to tea towels, socks to scrunchies, and more! We chose to do socks, so I picked up several packs of white cotton socks from a local department store. I also recommend that you pick up a disposable or plastic tablecloth to protect the table or work surface.
Before beginning the project an adult needs to read through the included instructions and set everything up. Once everything is ready to go…explain to the kids how it all works. Let the kids decide on which colors they want to use. The younger kids may need help attaching the rubberbands around the socks. Once the socks are prepared, let the kids go at it! Some of the kids in our group only used 3-4 different colors while others used almost all of them!
Oh, I almost forgot to mention. The included paint bottles have cute names printed on them. Such as: Peace Love Pink, Orange You Glad, Kind of a Big Teal, Blue Ribbon Blue, Let’s Indi-go Crazy, Green Vibe Only, etc. The kids got a kick out of that. The project kept the kids entertained for 30 minutes. I should of purchased a few t-shirts, tote bags, bandanas, etc. and left them tie-dye those too. There was PLENTY of dye included in the kit…over 12 pairs of cotton socks were dyed that day and we still had some left.

I have never Tie Dyed with my granddaughter. I shall speak to her mom and see if we can do this on one of her visits.
Now I know what I am going to do with my grandkids the next time they visit. I think doing socks is a great idea and nice that there is enough to do some other items as well.
Tie dye is fun. A friend had an outdoor t-shirt tie dye party and I still have my shirt.
I have never made tie dye before and it sounds fun. This is such a clever fun idea for a kids birthday party. I also had no idea you could buy one of these kits on Amazon. Thank you for sharing this one I love it.
